Working out of Sweden since the late 1980s, he's done one thing: refine the bass until there's nothing left to fix. Every neck joint, every fret slot, every pickup route - obsessive iteration across thousands of instruments. Henrik Linder of Dirty Loops, Janek Gwizdala, and a long list of pros who don't advertise their gear all come for the same thing: absolute clarity, lowest note to highest harmonic.

The fret thing

Here's what actually sets Mattisson apart — True Temperament fretting. Curved frets, invented by Swedish engineer Anders Thidell, replacing the straight frets on every conventional bass. Each one is mathematically optimised for perfect intonation across the entire fretboard. Not just at the 12th : everywhere. Chords ring true, harmonics lock in, and upper-register notes that normally drift sharp sit exactly where they should. Once you've heard it, standard fretting sounds like a rough draft. (Marketing exaggeration. Please don't sue.)  Since 2022, the basses are built in True Temperament's own factory in Trollhättan, Sweden : Mattisson's design philosophy, purpose-built manufacturing precision, all under Anders' direct supervision.

The lineup

  • HL-6 (Henrik Linder Signature) : the flagship. 33" scale 6-string, True Temperament stainless frets, dual EMG 45TW. Offset neck profile built for marathon sessions. The bass that put Mattisson on the map for a new generation.
  • JG Series (Janek Gwizdala Signature) : 32" scale, 28 frets, and a sound hole that lands between acoustic intimacy and electric authority. For a player who demands total transparency.
  • Series I : the foundation. Clean, focused, in 4, 5 or 6-string.
  • Series II & IV : progressively more refined: expanded tonewoods, electronics, and True Temperament options.
