Collection: Moon Basses

Moon Bass Guitars

Moon doesn't advertise and doesn't chase trends. Instead, they has been handbuilding instruments in Japan since 1979, and the people who play them tend to keep quiet about it, not because they're hiding anything, but because they'd rather not share the secret.

Then Larry Graham showed up with one, and the secret got out.

Built by PGM

Every Moon bass is built by PGM in Saitama Prefecture, Japan, a small workshop founded in 1978 by a group of former ESP builders. There, the team is tiny and the output limited, but the approach is almost stubbornly traditional: hand-selected tonewoods, and a build precision that makes you wonder what they're putting in the water out there.

The result is an instrument that feels finished in a way very few basses do. You pick it up, and within a few bars, you understand why professionals quietly make this their studio weapon of choice.

The Lineup

  • JJ-4 / JJ-5 Larry Graham - The one that started the conversation. White ash body, Bartolini 9S pickups, Bartolini NTBT preamp, gold hardware, and a slanted front pickup that gives the slap tone its legendary bite. Available in Larry's signature all-white finish and other colour options. This is the bass that defined Moon for a generation of funk and fusion players.
  • JB-4 / JB-5 - Moon's take on the jazz bass. Familiar layout, unfamiliar quality. Bartolini electronics, PGM's deep-joint neck pocket, and the kind of note definition that makes you rethink what a J-bass can do.
  • PB Classic - Precision-style simplicity executed with Japanese meticulousness. For players who want one pickup, one tone, and zero excuses. Mine is actually my most recorded bass in my career.

Custom Orders

Moon basses are rarely found outside Japan. As a European Moon dealer, we stock models directly and also handle custom orders through PGM. Tonewood selection, pickup configuration, finish, hardware : we can walk you through every option. However, because these instruments are handmade in small numbers, lead times apply. Worth the wait? Ask anyone who owns one.
