Roger Sadowsky started in New York in 1979 as a repair and setup specialist, the guy the city's session players trusted with instruments they could not afford to have wrong. Fixing turned into building, and the basses his team makes today are decades of obsessive refinement in physical form. The onboard preamp alone, a bass-and-treble boost paired with a vintage tone control, became an industry reference that half the bass world has tried to copy.

The Sadowsky range, and where each is built

Bass Freaks exclusive P-Bass runs. Here is something you will not find anywhere else: we commission our own Sadowsky P-Bass limited runs, spec'd by us in 4 and 5 string, in colours you cannot get off the standard menu. Vintage Burst, Lake Placid Blue, Sage Green Metallic, Olympic White, Solid Black, Candy Apple Red. When a Bass Freaks P-Bass run is live it is in this collection until it is gone, and it does not come back.

Signature models pass through too, from the Will Lee to the Verdine White, and standalone limited editions drop on a regular basis. They tend to move fast, so if you are the type who refreshes the page twice a day, you are our kind of person.

What is the Sadowsky sound, and what does the preamp do?
The Sadowsky voice is a clean, focused, mix-ready punch, the sound of countless studio records. The heart of it is the onboard preamp: a simple bass and treble boost paired with a VTC (vintage tone control) that rolls off top end like an old passive bass. It adds presence and clarity without the scooped hi-fi character of most active systems. It is why engineers love them.

What is the difference between NYC, MetroLine and MetroExpress?
Where and how they are built. NYC (MasterBuilt) basses are hand-made in Long Island City, New York, the top tier. MetroLine is built by Warwick in Germany under Sadowsky's supervision and is the value-to-quality sweet spot. MetroExpress is the affordable entry point built in Asia. All three carry the genuine Sadowsky preamp and DNA.

Is a Sadowsky basically a hot-rodded Jazz bass?
That is the root, but not the whole story. Roger built his name modifying and improving Jazz and Precision basses (Marcus Miller's famous '77 Jazz got the Sadowsky treatment), then refined every detail into his own instruments: the woods, the neck, the fretwork, the preamp. It is the Jazz-and-Precision idea executed to a standard the originals never reached.

Do Sadowsky basses come in 4, 5 and 6 string, and P, J or PJ?
Yes. Four and five string are the core, six turns up in the NYC line, and you will find J/J, P/J, M/J and single-cut configurations across the range. Our stock is a rotating mix, so check what is live below.
