Collection: De Gier Basses

De Gier basses are built one at a time by Sander de Gier in the Netherlands, roughly forty instruments a year, since 1996. We are an official De Gier dealer, so you can buy or order one from inside the EU, set up properly, with no import surprises. Bebop, Soulmate, Lowlander and the Classic Line.

What you get for the money is a bass that reads vintage and behaves modern: Fralin or Lollar pickups, De Gier's own bridge, Res-o-lite tuners, and necks that are carved rather than copied. Marcus Miller bought one of Sander's Jazz prototypes, and Glenn Gaddum Jr has his own De Gier signature. That is the company this brand keeps.

The Lineup

• Bebop - the model that put De Gier on the map. Jazz-style, alder or swamp ash body, through-body hard maple neck, two Fralin or Lollar pickups, volume, volume, dual tone and the Fatboost, an active but subtle bass boost. 34" scale, 4 or 5 strings.
• Soulmate - P character in sound, handling and feel, built for long sets. Alder body, hard maple neck, rosewood board, volume and tone, nothing in the way. 34" scale, 21 frets on the 4-string, 20 on the 5.
• Lowlander - the outlier. Spanish cedar body wings on a nine-ply cedar and walnut neck-through, two Lollar T-bird pickups, bone nut, 34-3/8" scale, 4 strings only. Fat, thick and growly.
• Classic Line - Soulmate Classic, Bebop Classic and Soulmate 51. Steel bridge instead of brass, vintage tuners, veneer fingerboards, thicker necks, no carbon reinforcement.
• Custom builds - swamp ash bodies, maple boards, fretless, binding, block inlays, relic finishes. Sander builds to order and we handle the spec sheet with him.

Standard or Classic?

Same shapes, two different instruments. The standard line is focused, aggressive and explosive: carbon-reinforced necks, slab fingerboards, brass bridge, Hipshot Res-o-lite tuners. The Classic line drops the carbon, moves to a steel bridge, vintage tuners and veneer fingerboards, and thickens the neck. The result is mellower and more open, closer to how an old bass actually behaves. Play modern, take the standard. Want the bass to push back, take the Classic.

Who makes De Gier basses?
Sander de Gier, a Dutch luthier building since 1996. Every instrument is made in his own workshop in the Netherlands, at around forty a year.

What is the difference between the De Gier Bebop and the Soulmate?
The Bebop is the Jazz-style bass: two pickups, volume, volume, dual tone, plus the Fatboost. The Soulmate is the P-style: fatter, simpler, volume and tone only. Both are 34" scale and available in 4 or 5 strings.

What is the De Gier Classic Line?
Soulmate Classic, Bebop Classic and Soulmate 51. Steel bridges, vintage tuners, veneer fingerboards, thicker necks and no carbon reinforcement, for a mellower, more open vintage voice.

How much does a De Gier bass cost?
A new standard-line De Gier sits in the 4,000 to 4,600 euro range in the EU, VAT included, depending on model, string count and options. Custom specs and relic work add to that.

Which players use De Gier?
Marcus Miller bought one of Sander's Jazz prototypes, and Glenn Gaddum Jr has a De Gier signature model. The brand is well established among Dutch and European session players.

Do you set the basses up before shipping?
Yes. Every bass we sell gets a full setup on the bench before it leaves the shop.
